My role
Product designer, user interface, user experience, and user testing.
Results
The profile page is now more visually distinct, with fields organized into logical groups for easier identification and improved overall usability. Complexity arises only when users opt for granular customization. The new UI allows users to effortlessly view all permissions without the need for user interaction, a significant improvement from the previous layout that required activating tabs to set or view app access for each application.

Overview
Agile development aims to continuously improve user functionality. However, this can sometimes lead to suboptimal integration with other features on the same page. To address this, we are revising the "user profile" page to enhance the user experience and mitigate any pain points.
Problem statement
The profile page have undergone multiple changes, introducing new features that have disrupted the user experience. The evolution of roles and permissions within the application has resulted in a confusing user experience and increased cognitive load, particularly for admin users who do not require such detailed granularity. Furthermore, there is an anticipation of additional functionality being added to the page, and it would be beneficial to have the current layout optimized for usability in order to provide a solid foundation for future enhancements.
Objective
This project aimed to elevate the user experience by incorporating design enhancements that optimize the page's usability and streamline user management for our users. Our goal was to minimize the time required for admin users to carry out everyday user management tasks.
Design process
To initiate this project, our initial focus was on identifying the existing functionalities of the page. We began by categorizing each element into groups, aiming to establish associations that would be meaningful to the user. Additionally, we employed a prioritization process to determine the optimal sequence for presenting these elements to enhance the overall intuitiveness of the page.
We know the user profile is accessible to two distinct user types: (1) administrators, who can view any user's page, and (2) staff users, who are limited to viewing only their own profile. To ensure that we provide users with precisely the information they require and nothing more, we aim to diligently record all of their user stories and tailor the page accordingly based on their specific usage.
Considering all this information, it was time to explore the permissions rules. It was essential to understand the roles and meanings within each app and the regulations and exceptions of the permissions. This knowledge would help us design a more intuitive pattern to communicate effectively with our users.
Understanding the permission rules
Understanding the permission rules enabled us to present options progressively as they became available. This approach reduces clutter and simplifies the intricate process of configuring user permissions. The new UI enables users to view all permissions at a glance without requiring any user interaction, in contrast to the previous layout where users had to activate tabs to set or view app access for each application.

Measuring success
In our plan, we will identify tasks, compare completion times in both interfaces and assess the impact of the new design. We'll prioritize tasks with less impact and explore additional improvement opportunities. To conduct a thorough 'time on task' assessment, I used Figma's latest variable feature to create a prototype mimicking a genuine application. Users can interact by clicking on various permission combinations, replicating a lifelike experience. The goal is to obtain precise data on time saved, comparing user interactions between the live application and the new UI presented in the prototype.
Takeaways
The redesigned profile page is a pivotal achievement, placing a spotlight on the substantial improvements made in permission provisioning. Through meticulous redesign, we have elevated the visual distinctiveness of the page by organizing fields into logical groups, enhancing ease of identification and overall usability. The most noteworthy enhancement is in permission management, where users can effortlessly comprehend and customize all permissions without the need for additional interactions. This streamlined approach not only simplifies the user experience but also marks a significant leap in efficiency and user autonomy, especially in granular customization. Our relentless focus on optimizing permission provisioning underscores our commitment to delivering a more intuitive and user-centric platform.
